Weekend Review (Week 7)

Prospect Matchup Review

LSU LT La'el Collins vs Florida DE Dante Fowler
With Collins looking to prove he has the skills needed to play left tackle in the NFL he needed a big game here. Instead it was Fowler who made the impact. Fowler notched a sack and two QB hurries and was a handful all afternoon. You have to wonder if Collins is going to be looking at playing RT in the NFL.

Auburn Running Game vs Mississippi State MLB Benardrick McKinney
This match up was a hard one to really gauge. Auburn was able to rush for 243 yards, while McKinney only finished with five tackles. While it wasn't a stand out game for McKinney he played well and the Bulldogs defense gave Auburn fits all game. QB Nick Marshall and the rest of the Tiger ball carriers had to fight for every yard.

Georgia LT John Theus vs Missouri DE Markus Golden
Looking to prove he belongs as a potential mid round pick, Theus had an up and down day going one on one with Golden. While Golden wasn't much of a factor in the passing game registering only one QB hurry, he was a force in the run game. Golden finished with ten tackles including one and half tackles for a loss. For a defensive end that is pretty good.

Syracuse SS Durell Eskridge vs Florida State TE Nick O'Leary
Looking to make a name for himself as a pass defender it was a rough day for Eskridge an the rest of the Syracuse secondary. Florida State QB Jameis Winston had little trouble throwing the ball and found O'Leary eight times for 97 yards and a touchdown. Despite playing the free safety position, Eskridge continues to look like an in the box safety and that only hurts his value going forward.

Heisman Watch

1. Dak Prescott QB Mississippi State
Last Week:  18/34 246 yards passing TD 2 INTs, 121 yards rushing 2 TDs vs Alabama (38-23) Next Week: BYE
Summary: It wasn't a flawless game for Prescott, but he was still able to lead the Bulldogs to a huge win over Auburn and continue to have the Bulldogs in the playoff picture. After getting past his two interceptions you see 367 total yards and four scores. With Gurley getting suspended and another big game against a top five opponent we are seeing him start to separate himself from the rest of the contenders.

2. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week: 17/27 210 yards passing 2 TDs, 75 yards rushing 2 TDs at UCLA (42-30) Next Week: at UCLA
Summary: With a dreadful performance against Arizona it looked like his chances were slipping away. However going out and dominating UCLA's defense and nobody else taking charge, Mariota makes his way back up. If the Ducks can get some players back along their offense line they should be able to run the table in the Pac 12 and that would allow Mariota to shine going into the playoff.

3. Melvin Gordon RB Wisconsin
Last Week:  27 carries for 175 yards 4 TDs vs Illinois (38-28) Next Week: BYE
Summary: With nobody being able to do anything at quarterback the Badgers have relied heavily on Melvin Gordon and so far he's been able to carry the load. His 175 yards this weekend gives him 871 yards on the season which puts him on pace to challenge for 2,000 yards. The Badgers are not that good this season, but you have to credit Gordon for what he's doing considering the Badgers passing game is nonexistent.

4. Amari Cooper WR Alabama
Last Week:  2 receptions for 22 yards at Arkansas (14-13) Next Week: vs Texas A&M
Summary: Blake Sims struggles against Arkansas not only almost cost the Tide the game, but it really affected Cooper's impact on the game. Finishing with only two catches for 22 yards. It's not going to eliminate him from contention, but that's two straight games without reaching the 100 yard mark. But in the SEC we know that he'll get his shot at some big time games so he could make an impression on voters. And we know with Lane Kiffin calling plays, he's going to get his opportunities.

5. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  BYE Next Week: at Northwestern
Summary: Even though Abdullah wasn't able to find any running room against Michigan State, his body of work keeps him at the tail end of the discussion. Having a bye week also doesn't help right afterwards. But we'll need Ameer to pick up where he left off before playing the Spartans and help the Huskers win out. Otherwise we'll see some other names start moving ahead of him.

Power 8

In

1.  Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-0)
Beating Auburn has to be the best win of the season so far and right now the Bulldogs look like the best team in the nation. With Alabama and Mississippi left they will have their work cut out for them. But at this rate they'll be fine.

2. Florida State Seminoles (6-0)
It was a lot closer than it should have been against Syracuse, but they keep winning. Florida State isn't as good as last year but the ACC won't give them any challenges. Get past Notre Dame and they should win out.

3. Baylor Bears (6-0)
If not for a 24 straight points, it would be TCU in this spot. Instead the Bears continue to win and continue to set up their chances of making the playoffs. They just need to avoid that slip up.

4. Oregon Ducks (5-1)
This is a reminder that I'm projecting towards the end of the season. The SEC will beat up on each other, while Oregon is starting to get healthy and should run through the Pac 12 and with only one loss they'll get in.

Knocking on the Door

5. Auburn Tigers (5-1)
Their loss to Mississippi State was tough, but we all know that it's going to be near impossible for some team to remain undefeated and that could allow them to get back in. Even if they win out and Miss State does too they could sneak in with other teams losing.

6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-0)
You have to hope the Irish were looking ahead to Florida State because almost getting beat by North Carolina doesn't put a lot of confidence in their chances against the 'Noles. A win and the Irish have the inside track to the playoffs.

7. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1)
Two late touchdowns made the Texas game look closer than it really was. Yeah they lost to TCU, but with the Horned Frogs losing to Baylor and likely another game, the Sooners just have to win out and they'd jump the Bears with a victory over them.

8. Michigan State Spartans (5-1)
I had the Spartans in last week, but the caveat was them winning out and blowing out teams. Only winning by 14 over Purdue isn't going to give voters the feeling that they are a team that should be in. We'll see, but for now it doesn't look like they'll be included.

Team on the Rise
Oklahoma State Cowboys
When you talk the Big 12 we've know about Oklahoma and Baylor. TCU made some noise, but we need to start including the Cowboys into that mix. After narrowly losing to the Seminoles in the opening week they've gone undefeated and are putting themselves in a position to challenge for the Big 12 Title.

Team on the Decline
Texas A&M Aggies
Whether it's the ghost of Johnny Manziel that is making the Aggies everybody's darling, but I don't get it. They blew out South Carolina to start the year but that isn't a good win anymore. Then they run through a bunch of nobodies and then narrowly beat cellar dweller Arkansas and everybody has them as a playoff team. Well that's why you wait for a team to beat somebody first. The Aggies are currently on a two game losing streak and with Alabama and Auburn left they'll likely going to end the year with at least four losses.

Team Under the Radar
Minnesota Golden Gophers
Don't look now, but the Gophers are sitting atop the Big 10 West standings. Their win over a surging Northwestern team was quite impressive. However they'll need QB Mitch Leidner to pick it up in the passing game if they are going to make it to the Big 10 Title Game.

Weekend Review (Week 6)

Prospect Matchup Review

Alabama WR Amari Cooper vs Mississippi CB Senquez Golson and FS Cody Prewitt
Going into this game we knew that Cooper wasn't going to get shut down and he didn't. But holding him to "only" 91 yards and no touchdowns has to be considered a win. The Ole Miss secondary was able to keep Cooper from going off and Golson even had the key interception to seal the game.

Arizona WR Austin Hill vs Oregon CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
This was thought to be a heavy weight match up with Hill's size vs Ekpre-Olomu's skill and tenacity. And you'd have to give the win to Ifo. Not only was Hill limited to 12 yards, no Arizona WR got over 50 yards. Arizona did most of their damage with their RB Terris Jones-Gisby.

Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah vs Michigan State DEs Shilique Calhoun & Marcus Rush
Michigan State keyed on Abdullah and wanted somebody else to beat them. And they were successful at that. They held him to only 45 yards rushing, but he had to earn everything. The running lanes were not there and he had to juke and duck just to get a yard or two. Abdullah was still able to get some good runs when he did have space but that was few and far between. The Spartans brought it this game.

Syracuse LT Sean Hickey vs Louisville OLB Lorenzo Mauldin
Hickey was able to hold his own for most of the game, however he wasn't able to completely slow down the talented Cardinal pass rusher. Although he didn't register a single sack, that didn't stop Mauldin from making an impact. Mauldin was able to get pressure on Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt three official times but was a handful the entire game.

Baylor LT Spencer Drango vs Texas DE Cedric Reed
Even though Texas got three sacks in the game, Reed was kept in check with only three tackles but no sacks and not a single quarterback hurry. Baylor wasn't able to put up huge points and gave up three sacks, but you can't really put the blame on Drango.

Heisman Watch

1. Dak Prescott QB Mississippi State
Last Week: 19/25 259 yards passing 2 TDs, 77 yards rushing 3 TDs vs Texas A&M (48-31) Next Week: vs Auburn
Summary: The trend lately has been the Heisman winner coming out of nowhere. Dak Prescott would fit that mold. He's lead the Bulldogs to two huge SEC victories (at LSU and Texas A&M) and has shined doing so. His latest performance was 336 5 touchdown win over A&M. With Mariota's loss the race is wide open and Prescott is taking the ball and running. Add in games against Auburn, Alabama, and Mississippi he'll have a chance to lock down the award or lose it.

2. Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  25 carries 163 yards rushing 2 TDs vs Vanderbilt (44-17) Next Week: at Missouri
Summary: With Mariota struggling in a loss it gave Gurley the opportunity to move up to the number one spot. However even Gurley's 163 yards weren't enough to keep Prescott from moving up. However all Gurley has to do is keep running like he is and have the Bulldogs win and he'll have just as good as a shot as anybody else. And for his sake, let's hope the injury bug doesn't creep up.

3. Amari Cooper WR Alabama
Last Week:  9 catches for 91 yards at Mississippi (17-23) Next Week: at Arkansas
Summary: Adding to all the craziness that happened this weekend, Cooper moves up a spot despite not scoring or getting to 100 yards. However Cooper has been on another planet and when your bad game is still nearly 100 yards that is saying something. Being on the losing end does hurt, but we all know that Alabama will contend for the SEC West Title and those high profile games keeps him right in the mix.

4. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week: 20/32 276 yards passing 2 TDs vs Arizona (24-31) Next Week: at UCLA
Summary: In most cases Mariota would have dropped out of the rankings, but who would replace him? Everett Golson? Nah. Melvin Gordon? Maybe. But can you really fault Mariota for the Oregon loss? He didn't throw any picks and was sacked several times behind a patch work offensive line. Add the level he was playing at and it's hard to really take him down. Mariota and the Ducks are still not out of the race and some big games could get him back to the top.

5. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  24 carries for 45 yards 2 TDs, 22 yards receiving at Michigan State (22-27) Next Week: BYE
Summary: After such a great month of September, Ameer faced his toughest defense and had a tough statistical night. He only got 45 yards but had to fight for each of those yards with his offensive line playing terrible. When Abdullah was able to get some space he looked like his usual self. He's got a long way to get back to where he was, but it's hard to drop him down when he's played so good. But his story and some good games ahead of him will get him to New York.

Power 8

In

1.  Auburn Tigers (5-0)
With all the drama of SEC teams losing, the Tigers boat race LSU and continue to stay unbeaten. But for some reason they are over looked and teams like Ole Miss and Mississippi State get all the love.

2. Florida State Seminoles (5-0)
After a scare last week against NC State, the Seminoles made early work with Wake Forest. Their game against Notre Dame looks to be their only tough game left on the schedule.

3. Baylor Bears (5-0)
With Oklahoma losing, the Bears move into the drivers seat in the Big 12. I've long believed that the Big 12 winner will get in and it will come down to their game against Oklahoma.

4. Michigan State Spartans (4-1)
It almost was a disaster for the Spartans almost blowing a 27-3 fourth quarter lead, but they won and they continue to look like the clear best team in the Big 10. They should run the table and with only a loss to the Ducks they should be a clear contender.

Knocking on the Door

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-0)
With a tough win over Stanford it looks like the Irish are going to be in this for the long haul. Even with a loss to Florida State a win out they could have enough to be included.

6. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1)
A huge loss for the Sooners who looked like the best team in college football till this week. But they win out and they are Big 12 Champs and that should get them in. The Big 12 is easily one of the three best conferences and a one loss champ should get in.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1)
Some will put one of the Mississippi schools in here and I don't blame them. But I'm not saying whose in right now, I'm still projecting. Alabama has an easier schedule than both of those schools and will be Auburn's top contender for the SEC Title.

8. Oregon Ducks (4-1)
Not ready to completely dismiss the Ducks. If they run the table that gives them wins over UCLA, Stanford, and likely UCLA, USC or a rematch at Arizona. That would still give them the impressive wins needed. However they HAVE to hope that there are only one or two undefeated teams.

Team on the Rise
Northwestern Wildcats
A disappointing 2013 season and then an 0-2 start to the season looked like doomsday for Northwestern. However they've rattled off three straight including wins over Penn State and Wisconsin. The Wildcats are now in the driver's seat in the wide open Big 10 West.

Team on the Decline
LSU Tigers
It's not so much that they're bad, it's more that they are just young and inexperienced. And that's going to happen when you lose as much NFL talent as they do each year. It just happen to catch up to them this year. The problem is they'll lose three or four games and everybody will blame Les Miles. Then they'll wonder why he might leave for Michigan.

Team Under the Radar
Ohio State Buckeyes
A loss to Virginia Tech and a young QB struggling looked like a doomed season for the Buckeyes. However they've continue to win since then and JT Barrett continues to improve. Don't forget that Ohio State wins out and they win the Division.

Weekend Review (Week 5)

Prospect Matchup Review

Washington CB Marcus Peters vs Stanford WR Ty Montgomery
Coming into this game Montgomery was playing as good as any receiver in the nation. And while Stanford got the win, Montgomery didn't have the game he would have liked. He finished with a touchdown, but only 29 yards receiving. You take that and add an interception by Peters and you could give the win to Peters. But a TD and the win makes it feel like a draw.

Washington DE Hau'oli Kikaha and OLB Shaq Thompson vs Stanford LT Andres Peat
Once again, stats will tell you that the Washington duo won this battle. Kikaha had a sack, Thompson had a tackle for a loss while the two combined for 13 tackles. Peat has a lot to like for a franchise left tackle, but he does struggle against speed and that was shown here.

Cincinnati QB Gunner Keil vs Ohio State CB Doran Grant
Even in defeat Keil put on a show throwing for 352 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions. However you would have thought the game would have been a closer game. So most of that came during junk time. As for Grant it's not a great day when the secondary gives up that many yards, especially allowing a receiver to have over 200 yards by himself.

Utah CB Eric Rowe vs Washington State WR Vince Mayle
While Rowe left this game with a pick six to start the game, it was Mayle who came out of this game as the winner. He had 120 yards and two touchdowns and most importantly the Cougars got the win. If Mayle can continue to develop he has the skills NFL teams like in their receivers.

Heisman Watch

1. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  BYE  Next Week: vs Arizona
Summary: We all know that the Heisman has really turned into a QB award with only one non QB winning the award since 2000. Mariota is clearly the top QB in college football and he's playing at the level needed to win this award.

2. Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  28 carries for 208 yards 2 TDs, 30 yards receiving vs Tennessee (35-32) Next Week: vs Vanderbilt
Summary: After having a small impact against Troy, Gurley was back to his normal explosive self. His 208 yards was his career high and Georgia needed every yard to get this win. And when Georgia needed a score to get the momentum back, it was Gurley who reeled off a 51 yard touchdown. Add in his hurdling of the Tennessee safety leaves an impression in voters minds.

3. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  22 carries for 208 yards 3 TDs vs Illinois (45-14) Next Week: at Michigan State
Summary: You knew it was going to be a huge game for Abdullah when on the first drive he accounted for 60 yards and was running through holes that most of us could get yards from. Abdullah had 100 yards in the first quarter and needed just one carry in the second half to eclipse the 200 yard mark for the second straight week. A win and another big game this upcoming week against Michigan State could allow Abdullah to find his way into the top two.

4. Amari Cooper WR Alabama
Last Week:  BYE Next Week: at Mississippi
Summary: After peaking last week at two, Cooper falls victim to having a bye week when other players go off. But Cooper fans shouldn't worry. Alabama hasn't even hit any of their tough SEC West schedule and if he goes off in those games and the Tide continues to win he'll be in contention.

5. Kenny Hill QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 21/41 386 yards 4 TDs INT, 30 yards rushing vs Arkansas (35-28) Next Week: at Mississippi State
Summary: Stats will tell you that Hill did a great job in the Aggies win over Arkansas. However I'm not buying Arkansas as a quality team and Hill did struggle for most of the game. His game against South Carolina seems like years ago and a huge game from Everett Golson could have dropped him. But who else would go here right now? Not really anybody else. But he'll need to step up against Mississippi State to keep in this race.

Power 8

In

1. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)
A week off doesn't change anything. The Sooners have made every game look easy, including against two opponents other top teams have struggled with.

2. Oregon Ducks (4-0)
A wisely placed bye week helps the Ducks as they face off against a tough 4-0 Arizona team on Thursday night. Oregon will look to get revenge on the Wildcats who blew them out last season.

3.  Auburn Tigers (4-0)
Not sure why, but some have nitpicked Auburn's 45-17 win over Louisiana Tech. But they were up 24-0 early and with LSU coming up next week you have to think they were looking past the Bulldogs juts a little.

4. Florida State Seminoles (4-0)
I really wanted to knock the Seminoles out of the top four after they struggled to beat NC State, but I really struggled to find another team to put in here. Sure Alabama or Baylor could move in here, but I really don't see a loss on the Seminoles upcoming schedule.

Knocking on the Door

5. Baylor Bears (5-0)
Another route for the Bears jumping out to an early 35-7 halftime lead over Iowa State. The Bears will continue to roll till they match up with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State to finish out the season.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
A classic elimination game coming up this weekend against Mississippi. But at the rate the SEC is going with teams beating up on each other we could have zero undefeated teams in the conference. And we know that the SEC champ will be in the playoff.

7. Michigan State Spartans (3-1)
I haven't had a Big 10 team on here since the Spartans lost to Oregon. Since the lost (closer game than score indicates) the Spartans have flat out dominated. Their two biggest test are this upcoming week against Nebraska and then Ohio State later in the year. If the Spartans win out it will be hard to keep them out.

8. Georgia Bulldogs (3-1)
After narrowly defeating Tennessee I was ready to move the Bulldogs out, but the South Carolina loses to Missouri and the Bulldogs are back to being the top team in the SEC East. And as I firmly believe, if they win the SEC Title they are in. But they'll need their defense to reach their potential or they'll lose another game, or two.

Team on the Rise
Mississippi State Bulldogs
It's easy to get lost in the shuffle in the SEC West and that's exactly what the Bulldogs have been the last several years. They figured to be in that same spot till a huge upset win at LSU. The Bulldogs are a talented group and lead by QB Dak Prescott and ILB Benardrick McKinney.  We'll find out if they are for real the next two weeks with games against Texas A&M and Auburn.

Team on the Decline
Texas Tech Red Raiders
With all the talk and hype Kliff Kingsbury gets you would think the Red Raiders are a Big 12 Power. Not a team that has lost six straight conference games and zero quality wins. They've feasted on their easy games and with a high powered offense it really masks the poor defense and overall lack of talent. With West Virginia coming to down I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see them extend Tech's losing streak to seven.

Team Under the Radar
California Golden Bears
If not for a Hail Mary catch, the Bears would be sitting at 4-0. That would have equaled their win total for the past two years combined. Now the Bears are not likely going to contend for the North Division Title, but they will make a run at six wins and their first bowl game in three years. Head coach Sonny Dykes is rebuilding this team which could be a player in the next couple of years.

Weekend Review (Week 4)

Prospect Matchup Review

Miami ILB Denzel Perryman vs Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah
This was a pretty hyped up match up with Abdullah's agility and quickness vs Perryman's speed and instincts. However this was a pretty one sided. Not only did Nebraska score 41 points but the team rushed for 347 yards. Abdullah himself had 230 and a two touchdowns. Abdullah didn't break off any big runs, but still averaged over six yards per carry. Perryman could very well have a good NFL career. But this match up went to Abdullah.

Florida State LT Cameron Erving vs Clemson DE Vic Beasley
Florida State may have won the game, but this battle goes to Beasley. Erving was looking to prove that he was the best Left Tackle in this draft class, but this is not what he wanted to show off to scouts. Beasley used his speed and quickness to cause two sacks and cause havoc for back up quarterback Sean Maguire. Heck Beasley even had a pass breakup.

Iowa DT Carl Davis vs Pittsburgh RB James Connor
A defensive lineman by himself is never going to truly shut down a good running back, but they could do better than what Davis did against James Connor. Connor was able to have his way in route to 157 yards, a touchdown, and over five yards per carry. Davis on the other hand had only two assisted tackles and combined for a tackle for a loss. Even with facing double teams you would think that Davis would be able to do more.

West Virginia DE Shaquille Riddick vs Oklahoma LT Tyrus Thompson and RT Daryl Williams
With Riddick looking to prove himself as one of the top pass rushers in college football, he fell flat on his face. Riddick failed to register any stats. Not a tackle, sack or even quarterback hurry. Riddick's athletic ability was negated by both Sooner tackles who are light on their feet as well. But what's worse is that Riddick was often man handled in the run game which rises even more questions about his NFL future.

Heisman Watch

1. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  21/25 for 329 yards passing 5 TDs, 58 yards rushing at Washington State (35-31)  Next Week: vs Arizona
Summary: With a possible upset happening, the Ducks needed Mariota to step up and that's exactly what he did. Not only did have nearly 400 total yards and five touchdowns but he competed 84% of his passes and lead the Ducks to a game winning drive with five minutes to go. While it's not against a top flight team, saving potential bad losses is just as big. With that said, Mariota will need another big game next week against an undefeated Arizona team that blew out the Ducks last year.

2. Amari Cooper WR Alabama
Last Week:  10 receptions for 201 yards 3 TDs vs Florida (42-21) Next Week: BYE
Summary: Much like Toddy Gurley, Cooper is one of the best players in college football. We've known that for a while. But now with new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin targeting Cooper almost every pass player it's illustrating it even more. We know that Alabama will be a contender for the National Title and if Cooper continues to keep this up he could be the first wide receiver to win the Heisman since Desmond Howard in 1991.

3. Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  6 carries for 73 yards vs Troy (68-0) Next Week: vs Tennessee
Summary: When your team wins 68-0 and you've touched the ball plenty in the previous three games it's understandable that you only have six carries. But with those six carries go for 73 yards that is still impressive. Yes this small output does hurt him a little, but let's be honest. Gurley isn't going to win the Heisman with games against Troy, it's games like Clemson and South Carolina and will continue with SEC play.

4. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  35 carries 230 yards 2 TDs, 1 receiving TD vs Miami, FL (41-31) Next Week: vs Illinois
Summary: Despite Miami's best effort to slow Abdullah down, it proved to be not. Abdullah keyed the Huskers run game en route to 309 all purpose yards and three total touchdowns. With this performance Abdullah went from being a candidate to being a strong contender. However for Abdullah to continue to be in the race, he'll need the Huskers to continue to win. Because we know that he'll have the yards and touchdowns.

5.Kenny Hill QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 16/22 265 yards 2 TDs INT, 57 yards receiving at SMU (58-6) Next Week: vs Arkansas
Summary: It seems like forever ago Hill was lighting up South Carolina. Yes with how the Gamecocks have played has made that game all the more impressive. However with their poor non-conference schedule we've barely seen him. That will change this next week when Arkansas comes to town along with the rest of the SEC schedule. But he tumbles because of it.

Power 8

In

1. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)
After another dominating performance against a quality opponent, the Sooners are the clear top team in college football. Let's remember that it was Alabama that struggled with West Virginia.

2. Oregon Ducks (4-0)
It was pretty close to being a disaster against Washington State. However the Ducks pulled it out and remain undefeated. But they'll have to play better or that Michigan State win will be forgotten.

3.  Auburn Tigers (3-0)
Winning on the road in Manhattan Kansas is not easy. However Auburn got the win and an impressive victory. In a very tough SEC West the Tigers continue to look the best.

4. Florida State Seminoles (3-0)
I don't care that Jameis Winston wasn't playing, the Seminoles are loaded with talent and should won walking away against Clemson. Makes you wonder if they won't slip up along the way.

Knocking on the Door

5. Baylor Bears (4-0)
It was a bye week and nothing really changed here. Baylor continues to be knocking on the door till they drop an unexpected loss or their game against Oklahoma.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
The Crimson Tide really kicked into gear in the second half in route to a blow out win over Florida. Alabama continues to look more impressive, but I'm still not impressed till they play somebody in their own conference.

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0)
A week off should allow the Fighting Irish to rest up for an upcoming stretch that sees Stanford and Florida State. Those games either get Notre Dame into the playoffs or keeps them off.

8. Georgia Bulldogs (2-1)
Nothing continues to change. The winner of the Georgia, South Carolina puts them into the SEC Title Game and a great shot of getting in. Right now Georgia still remains the better of the two.

Team on the Rise
East Carolina Pirates
A ten point loss to South Carolina in Columbia is the only thing that's standing in the way of the Pirates being a serious contender for the playoffs. That happens when you beat Virginia Tech in Blackburg and North Carolina by 29 points. Only Cincinnati stands in the way in what should be a 11 win season and an AAC Title.

Team on the Decline
Michigan Wolverines
2004 seems like ages ago, but that was the last time that Michigan won a Big 10 title. They were a contender this year, but with their QB returning and another top ranked recruiting class you would think they would be improved. Instead they lost to Utah at home by 16 to give them their second non conference loss. Right now Michigan would be lucky to end with only four losses. What happened to this once proud program.

Team Under the Radar
Washington Huskies
One of the quietest 4-0 teams has to be the Huskies. But that's exactly how new coach Chris Peterson likes it. They have all the talent in the world and now have one of the top X's and O's coaches in college football. They host Stanford this weekend and a win there would really open eyes and could see the Huskies get some Pac 12 North love.

Weekend Review (Week 3)

Prospect Matchup Review

Georgia DE Ray Drew, OLB Leonard Floyd, and OLB Jordan  Jenkins vs South Carolina LT Corey Robinson and LG AJ Cann
We all knew that Cann and Robinson were good run blockers and that was very evident in this game helping the Gamecocks go for 176 yards on the ground. However it was their play in the pass game that was the big surprise. Floyd, Jenkins, and Drew combined for zero sacks and only a half tackle for a loss. Not the showing you would expect out of Floyd and Jenkins who are two of the top edge rushers in this draft class. Cann's stock was already pointed upward, but continue to keep an eye on Robinson.

Arkansas DE Trey Flowers vs Texas Tech LT La'Raven Clark
Going into this match up you would think that Clark would have his hands full dealing with Flowers' strength. However Flowers really didn't have the impact you would think. Finishing with only three tackles and a tackle for a loss it was so so. However Clark didn't give up a single sack which should help his stock as he can show he can play both tackle or guard.

Florida LT Chaz Green vs Kentucky DE's Alvin Dupree and Za'Darius Smith
While they didn't escape with the win, it was a good night for the Wildcat duo. They combined for 11.5 tackles, a half sack, and three QB hurries. They played a huge role in limiting the Gators to 20 points in regulation and putting them in a place to win the game. Green on the other hand had to play LT due to an injury and wasn't in his comfort zone.

East Carolina WR Justin Hardy vs Virginia Tech CB Kendall Fuller and SS Kyshoen Jarrett
While Hardy played a big role in the Pirates upset of Virginia Tech, he didn't have the huge game that many expected. Hardy had four catches for 47 yards, but with teammate Cam Worthy going off that really limited this match up from really taking place. But part of that was the attention that Hardy was receiving.

Heisman Watch

1. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  19/23 221 yards passing 2 TDs, 71 yards rushing 2 TDs vs Wyoming (48-14)  Next Week: at Washington State
Summary: There really isn't much to right about for Mariota. He was expected to cruise past Wyoming and did just that with 392 total yards and four total touchdowns. With a slight down game from Gurley, Mariota becomes the clear favorite for the Heisman. With the win over Michigan State and easy wins over the next couple of weeks we won't get much for Mariota. However we'll see if Maritoa can hold onto the lead when the heart of their schedule comes up with UCLA and Stanford in consecutive weeks.

2. Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  20 carries 131 yards rushing TD at South Carolina (35-38) Next Week: vs Troy
Summary: You really can't blame Gurley for the Bulldogs loss to South Carolina, but it still affects his Heisman status. However you have to wonder what could have been. Gurley had a long TD called back which caused the Bulldogs to punt. Then with it being first and goal, a pass was called instead of giving the ball to Gurley which ended up being an intentional grounding. If you just give the ball to your best player they might have won the game and we might now be talking about Gurley taking over the lead again.

3.Kenny Hill QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 20/31 300 yards passing 4 TDs, 38 yards rushing vs Rice (38-10) Next Week: at SMU
Summary: Hill continues to put up video game numbers and look to be in total control, but does his 300 yards and 4 TDs even register with anybody? He's really being hurt by playing such an easy schedule. Which makes that opening week dominance of South Carolina seem like last year. It won't change this this week when Aggies host SMU who have looked hapless this season. October 11th against Mississippi can't get here fast enough.

4. James Connor RB Pittsburgh
Last Week:  31 carries 177 yards rushing 3 TDs vs Florida International (42-25) Next Week: vs Iowa
Summary: His name might not yet be household, but it will soon. All Connor has done since taking over in the middle of last year is produce. He's a rushing machine going for 177 yards against FIU bringing his total to 554 yards and 8 touchdowns. Connor could easily be this year's Andre Williams as the unknown running back. But the main difference is that Connor is making his mark early in the season while Williams didn't get notice till the end. Connor will get tested against an Iowa team that is very stout against the run.

5. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  19 carries for 110 yards rushing TD at Fresno State (55-19) Next Week: vs Miami (Fl)
Summary: Outside of his early 57 yard touchdown run in the first quarter, we really didn't see much from Abdullah in this one. But that also could be attributed to the Bulldogs poor secondary and the Huskers lessening the load for Abdullah. That should change with Miami coming to town. A big game matched up against Miami ILB Denzel Perryman could really help Abdullah out and give him a change to move up the list.

Power 8

In

1. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)
Nothing changing here. Seminoles were on a bye week and will pick up with Clemson. Florida State is the clear best team in the ACC and should have yet another undefeated season, locking them into the playoff.

2. Oregon Ducks (3-0)
Standard game for the Ducks who rolled a Wyoming team that did hold them scoreless for the first quarter. The Ducks should continue to cruise till their game vs nemesis Stanford. Get past them, the Ducks could be thinking #1 seed.

3. Oklahoma Sooners (3-0)
Their 34-10 win over Tennessee continues to show that the Sooners are playing at an elite level. Sure it was in Norman and Tennessee still finished towards the bottom of the East. But the Volunteers had a ton of momentum with them and the Sooners just ran by them.

4.  Auburn Tigers (2-0)
I don't understand why people are overlooking Auburn. Not only did they almost win the National Title last year but their QB is back and they've looked like they haven't skipped a beat. Their the best team in the SEC in my eye and that gets them in right now.

Knocking on the Door

5. Baylor Bears (3-0)
It's not so much what Baylor hasn't done, it's more of what Oklahoma is doing. Baylor will get their shot and as long as they are playing like they have it will come down to that November 8th game vs Oklahoma.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0)
In a muddled up SEC, the Crimson Tide are in a great spot. Even if they lose a game or two. The SEC champ is going to the playoff and that's all the Tide need to worry about. As long as Blake Sims continues to develop, or just get the ball to Amari Cooper, Alabama has a great shot.

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0)
It only beating Rice, Michigan, and now Purdue which is nothing to brag about. But since Everett Golson has returned the offense has looked like Brian Kelly's old Central Michigan and Cincinnati juggernauts. They'll get their tests against USC, Florida State, and Stanford. But escaping that with only a loss could earn their spot into the playoff.

8. Georgia Bulldogs (1-1)
So maybe the Bulldogs aren't as good as we thought they were. However let's not forget that the SEC East is very wide open and Georgia is the most talented team in that group. Win out and they are likely in the SEC Title Game which  we all know the winner is automatically in. So don't count out the Bulldogs yet.

Team on the Rise
BYU Cougars
If you haven't heard much about BYU lately, you aren't watching college football very closely. The Cougars were a team that was poised for a big year, but with a dominating win over Texas and two quality wins over Houston and UConn it looks like the Cougars could go undefeated. It starts with QB Taysom Hill has his ability to run, but when you add their dynamic RB Jamaal Williams and it really stresses the defense trying to stop both of them. Their defense has really stepped up while missing talented pass rusher Bronson Kaufusi. I'm not sure they get into the playoff talk, but it's going to be hard if they do run the table.

Team on the Decline
Central Florida Knights
It was clear that last year was a magical season that saw QB Blake Bortels emerge to go with a talented RB in Storm Johnson which ended with one loss, AAC Title, and a Fiesta Bowl win. Now it's not like this team just came out of nowhere. They have talent and were expected to still contend for the conference title. However in their two games this year the Knights just haven't looked as good as they should be. Look for them to fall back to the middle of the AAC.

Team Under the Radar
Virginia Cavilers
If it wasn't for three turnovers returned for touchdowns against UCLA, we could be talking about a 3-0 Virginia team. Lead by their defense, the Cavilers are turning what many (including me) thought would be another last place ACC finish. Their defense is going to keep them in games, while their offense needs to cut down on its turnovers. They won't beat FSU for the division, but they're easily a bowl team. Looks like Mike London may be saving his job.

Weekend Review (Week 2)

Prospect Matchup Review

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota vs Michigan State Defense
For two and a half quarters, the Spartans were holding Mariota and the Duck offense in check. The sacked Mariota three times while Rush, Calhoun, and Jones were doing a good job of playing the zone read. However Mariota kicked it into gear when he needed to and it was his arm that won the game. Whether it was the Spartan defense was wearing down, or some busted coverage Mariota was able to find two wide open receivers to take the lead. Even though Spartans lost big, it was still a good game for players like Calhoun and Trae Waynes.

USC Nelson Agholor vs Stanford CBs Alex Carter and Wayne Lyons
While it wasn't a huge stand out performance, Nelson Agholor can still be considered the winner here. Not only did USC get the win, but Agholor had 9 catches for 91 yards. No touchdowns, but the two Stanford corners weren't able to corral him enough which also allowed USC RB Javorius Allen more room to run in route to his 154 yards.

Alabama WR Amari Cooper vs Florida Atlantic CB D'Joun Smith
Going into this matchup we knew that D'Joun Smith wasn't going to slow down Cooper, let alone shut him down. But mainly we wanted to see how Smith would do against the best WR in the nation. Well that never happened because Smith sat out of the game because of a shoulder injury he suffered the week before against Nebraska. However Cooper went off in this game with 189 yards and a TD. So even with Smith, Cooper was on another level.

Utah WR Dres Anderson vs Fresno State S Derron Smith
It wasn't all Smith's fault, but when you get 268 yards and 5 TDs against you that really falls onto their leader and free safety. Part of that success against Fresno Sate and Smith was Anderson who had two touchdowns and 84 yards. Utah's attack was just too much and really put a lot of pressure on Smith and wasn't able to capitalize on any mistakes.

Michigan WR/TE Devin Funchess vs Notre Dame DBs Cody Riggs and Austin Collinsworth
Even though Michigan's offensive performance (first time shut out since 1984) was beyond horrible, the silver lining was how Funchess played. Even though he didn't score a TD, Funchess was a force in the first half and finished with 107 yards receiving. But when you add in poor offensive line play and shoddy QB play and it's no wonder he didn't have bigger numbers. Funchess' size and leaping ability are just too much for anybody in college football this year.

Heisman Watch

1. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  17/28 318 yards passing 3 TDs, 42 yards rushing vs Michigan State (46-27)  Next Week: vs Wyoming
Summary: In his first make or break game, Mariota came out on top. It was an up and down game for Mariota, but even during his lull, Mariota didn't play bad or make any glaring mistakes. Instead he lead the Ducks from behind with two third quarter touchdowns that gave them the lead. The Heisman is all about momentum and winning the marquee game of the year so far is really going to do wonders for his stock. Voters will remember his come back performance and it's a clear reason why Mariota has vaulted back to the top of the rankings.

2. Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  BYE  Next Week: at South Carolina
Summary: Even though Gurley and the Bulldogs didn't play he slips a bit. That's what happens when you have an early bye and another player has a huge performance. But if your a Gurley fan, don't panic. There is plenty season left and with South Carolina winning this weekend it makes their game against Georgia better. And if Gurley can replicate the game he had against Clemson he will continue to be in the top tier of contenders. He just needs to stay healthy all year long.

3.Kenny Hill QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 17/26 283 yards passing 4 TDs vs Lamar (73-3) Next Week: vs Rice
Summary: Now this game didn't have the fan fare that his debut against South Carolina had, but Hill continued to show his ability to run this offense. He completely 65% of his passes while nearly throwing for 300 yards. The big problem for Hill will be they don't play another quality opponent till October 11th when they play Mississippi. That's a long time to maintain the impact he had to start the season and we could see him sliding down this list pretty soon.

4. Jameis Winston QB Florida State
Last Week:  22/27 256 yards passing 2 TDs vs Citadel (37-12) Next Week:  BYE
Summary: It was a lot easier for Winston this week as he and the Seminoles cruised to an easy win. Winston is in an interesting position, it's going to take a lot for him to repeat winning the award, but the Seminoles are going to roll all year long again and they do play an improved schedule from last year. However with an investigation opened up from his sexual assault from a couple of years ago now opening you have to wonder if voters will want to stay away from him. We'll see in a couple of weeks when they face off against Clemson.

5. Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska
Last Week:  17 carries for 54 yards rushing TD, 96 yards receiving TD vs McNeese State (31-24) Next Week: at Fresno State
Summary: Now Abdullah didn't have another 232 yard rushing performance like he did against FAU and he struggle to get going against a FCS school, but Abdullah made it count when the Huskers needed it the most. With the game tied in the final minutes, Abdullah took a short pass broke five tackles in route to a 58 yard touchdown reception to win the game for the Huskers. It's hard to have a Heisman moment against a FCS school, but that saved the Huskers season and illustrates the type of player Abdullah is.

Power 8

In

1. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)
Nothing really new for the Seminoles. They continue to look like the best team in the nation and they should win out. Now they're schedule is tougher than it was last year which only helps their cause.

2. Oregon Ducks (2-0)
With their win against Michigan State that gives the Ducks the best win of the season so far. Not only did they win, but they looked good doing so against a physical team. That should help them in the future vs Stanford who looks to have taken a step back.

3. Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)
It was a week off for the Bulldogs who will be facing off against South Carolina this upcoming week. We know the SEC champ will get in and right now the Bulldogs look like the best team in the SEC.

4. Baylor Bears (2-0)
Oklahoma continues to get most of the love for the Big 12 teams, but the Bears didn't lose a beat without Bryce Petty, Levi Norwood, Antwan Goodley and a couple of other players. As they get those players back to full strength they could be unstoppable.

Knocking on the Door

5. Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)
I have Oklahoma the next team to come in, but that doesn't mean that they're the fifth best team in college football. They are here because it's toss up between them and Baylor and it's very close. Their game November 8th is going to be epic.

6.  Auburn Tigers (2-0)
The Tigers continue to look like the best team in the SEC West in my eyes and even if they have two losses but win the conference championship game, they are still going to get in over teams with one loss.

7. USC Trojans (2-0)
It wasn't pretty, but they got a huge win over Stanford and the Trojans under Steve Sarksian look like a new team. Without having to play Oregon till the Pac 12 Title Game and seeing UCLA struggling they have a legit shot at being undefeated going into the conference championship game.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)
The third SEC team in this list mainly because the SEC is pretty wide open. I'm not a huge fan of the Tide this year with such uncertainty at QB. I could really see them losing three games this year, but really don't know who else realistically could fit here. Not ready for Notre Dame whose schedule is too brutal. But don't count out Michigan State quite yet. They run the table and they could sneak back into the discussion.

Team on the Rise
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
It was one thing to come out and dominate Rice, but to do the same thing to Michigan really says something about this team. Not to mention dealing with losing three NFL Draft caliber players before the season to suspension. The big difference has been getting QB Everret Golson back who has breathed life into the Irish offense. They went from being a fringe top 25 team to now being a team you have to consider in the playoff discussion.

Team on the Decline
Fresno State Bulldogs
Remember last year? A team that won the Mountain West, was undefeated and flirting with a BCS Bowl. Yeah they lost some key players (QB Derek Carr and WR Davante Adams) but returned plenty of talent and were poised to challenge once again for the Mountain West. However it looks like it's going to be a long year in the Valley. Not only did they get blown out by 39 to USC, but they also lost by 32 to Pac 12 cellar dweller Utah. Now with Nebraska coming to town it likely means they'll be 0-3 which is worst case scenario.

Team Under the Radar
Pittsburgh Panthers
I was a big fan of Pitt hiring Paul Chryst from Wisconsin and in his third year the Panthers are starting to see their hard work paying off. This team is loaded with young talent and now with a little bit of experience they are going to be a very tough team in the ACC. RB James Connor is a force running the ball and is going to start getting some Heisman love, while WR Tyler Boyd is going to be a hot WR prospect once he becomes draft eligible.

Weekend Review (Week 1)

Prospect Matchup Review

Clemson DE Vic Beasley and DT Grady Jarrett vs Georgia RB Todd Gurley
For almost three quarters, this match was pretty much even.  However it was the fourth quarter where Gurley took over and dominated.  Whether it was going through massive holes up the middle or bouncing it to the outside. It wasn't a total loss for Beasley who did notch a sack in the first half.

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon vs LSU DEs Jermauria Russell and Danielle Hunter
It was a story of two haves for this match up.  In the first half Gordon showed why some are considering him the best running back in the nation. He was explosive and gave the Tigers all they could handle. However in the last two and a half quarters Gordon was shut down. LSU loaded the box and their athletic ability was just too much to overcome. But he did finish with 140 yards and a TD, it wasn't a total loss.

Notre Dame RG Christian Lombard vs Rice DT Christian Covington
Looking to make a name for himself against the best team he'd play all year he failed to do so. Notching only two tackles and zero QB hurries while their defense was lit up. Now Covington was by far the Owls best defensive player and saw plenty of double teams. It was going to be tough for him, but this was missed opportunity.

Heisman Watch

1.  Todd Gurley RB Georgia
Last Week:  15 carries 198 yards 3 TDs, KO return TD vs Clemson Next Week: BYE
Summary:  After an injury filled 2013, Gurley used this game to announce his presence with authority. Showing his power and speed he rushing for 198 yards and three scores dominating a supposively improved Tiger defense. Add in the 100 yard kick off for a touchdown and it was a complete game for this back. Next week the Bulldogs are off before a big SEC match up with South Carolina.

2.  Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  14/20 267 yards passing 3 TDs, 43 yards rushing TD vs South Dakota  Next Week:  vs Michigan State
Summary:  It was a pretty standard game for Mariota seeing they played a FCS school while playing just two quarters. But this is the same reason why Mariota is one of the front runners for the award. But as we know, you win the Heisman on big games. And Mariota has his first crack with a non conference showdown against Michigan State. A huge game and win against the Spartan defense would really set him apart from the rest of the contenders.

3.Kenny Hill QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 44/60 511 yards 3 TDs at South Carolina  Next Week:  vs Lamar
Summary: Forget Johnny Football, we've got Kenny Football. Hill made it look easy at South Carolina breaking a school record for most yards in a game with 511. The Heisman is all about momentum and Hill clearly has that. He'll put up numbers in this system, but is that enough?

4.  Bryce Petty QB Baylor
Last Week:  13/23 161 yards passing 2 TDs, Rushing TD  Next Week:  vs Northwestern State
Summary:  After getting banged up in the opening series, Petty was still able to get some work in. Throwing over 161 yards and even adding a rushing TD is quite a bit for somebody who was injured. And that was done all in the first half. Petty will likely be fine, otherwise he wouldn't have stayed in the game. His stats took a hit, but he'll be able to get those back this next week against the FCS foe. But we all know it will be what he and the rest of his team does in the Big 12 conference that gets him to New York or not.

5. Jameis Winston QB Florida State
Last Week:  25/40 370 yards passing TD and 2 INTs, rushing TD Next Week:  vs Citadel
Summary:  If Winston wants to be only the second two time winner of the Heisman, he'll have to have better performances than this game. Sure he threw for almost 400 yards, but he threw two picks and 62% passing. But will voters see that? Or will they see 370 yards and one amazing run that saw him hurdle, twist and dive in for a touchdown?

Power 8

In
1. Florida State Seminoles (1-0)
There game against Oklahoma State wasn't the blowout that many expected. But they got the win and right now that's all that matters. Their schedule isn't great, but as long as they keep winning they're in.

2. Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)
This could be the first year the SEC West isn't the division representing in the title game. But the Bulldogs really showed what they are capable with their win over Clemson. If the defense gets confidence then they could be scary good.

3. Oregon Ducks (1-0)
If Oregon is going to win the National Title or least get back to the game, you would think this would be the year. Mariota is in his third year while the coaching staff will be more comfortable running the show.

4. Baylor Bears (1-0)
Oklahoma has been the media darling, but it could be the Bears that get into the playoffs. We know about their offense, but it's their defense that could be the difference maker. Now SMU isn't good, but they can score points and the Bears locked them down.

Knocking on the Door
5. Michigan State Spartans (1-0)
If Sparty can knock off Oregon than they could be a lock for the playoff, but if that is their only loss they do have a shot. But they need their conference mates to help out.

6. Oklahoma Sooners (1-0)
They'll have a shot with their schedule, but I'm not sure they can win enough games to make it. But they'll need QB Trevor Knight to be more consistent.  That's a big if.

7.  Auburn Tigers (1-0)
The Tigers are good, very good. However they might not be as good as last year while the rest of the division has gotten better. Then add in that Georgia might be the best  team in the conference and they could be on the outside looking in.

8.  Stanford Cardinal (1-0)
They're clearly the bottom of these eight teams, but their schedule sets up nice and they seem to have Oregon's number. But they'll have to avoid that huge slip up they tend to have each year.

Team on the Rise
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Watch out now, the Irish could be back! Having Everett Golson back has really breathed life into this team and that showed with an impressive 5 touchdown performance. If Notre Dame can finally live up to Brian Kelly's previous offensive teams then we could see this team in the first ever playoff.

Team on the Decline
South Carolina Gamecocks
The constant for the Gamecocks under Steve Spurrier has always been their defense. They've churned out NFL prospect after NFL prospect which has helped them be a force in the SEC East year in and year out. This year could be the exception. Not only did they give up 52 points but 680 total yards. Pair that up with an offense that can't throw the ball when they need to and it spells a long year and four or five losses.

Team Under the Radar
Colorado State Rams
It may have been against the worst team in the Pac 12 and they needed 17 straight points to get the win, but Jim McElwain's really building a team in Fort Collins. But they're coming off an eight win season last year and have already avenged one of the losses from last year. The Rams also have some quality NFL talent on their roster. The Mountain West better watch out, because the Rams are serious contenders to win the title.

Bold Prediction

Texas A&M's Kenny Hill is going to win a Heisman before his career is over.
If there was any concern how the A&M offense was going to be after Manziel left was quickly answered this past Thursday.  Not only did Hill lead the Aggies to a win vs South Carolina, he helped the A&M route the Gamecocks. His 511 yards broke Manziel's single game passing record.  Hill clearly is a talented QB and in Sumlin's spread scheme is going to put up numbers.  Hill will be a contender to win the Heisman this season, but he's only a sophomore and he'll have a better opportunity the next couple of years once the Aggies defense improves and they are back to contending for the SEC Title.
