1. Tajh Boyd QB Clemson
Last Week: 24/37 244 yards 3 TDs, 38 yards rushing vs North Carolina State (26-14) Next Week: vs Wake Forrest
Summary: Sometimes it's not about how you win, but getting the win. In their game against NC State, Tajh Boyd and the rest of the offense were not up to their high flying ways. But they were able to get a lead hold onto it and then when Clemson needed a score to put the game away, Boyd was able to make the play needed. He still hods onto the top spot, but he's lucky Mariota didn't play this weekend. Boyd will need a huge game coming up, or he could start to slide.
2. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week: BYE Next Week: at California
Summary: After a tremendous start to the season, the Ducks and Mariota get a bye week before they start their conference schedule. It's safe to say that Mariota's experience and knowledge of the offense are good enough to take the hit of losing head coach Chip Kelly to the NFL. Don't look for California or Colorado to pose much of any trouble for Mariota where he can rack up some sacks. But three weeks from now the Ducks face off against Washington in what could be a huge game for Mariota's Heisman chances.
3. Teddy Bridgewater QB Louisville
Last Week: 17/22 212 yards 4 TDs vs Florida International (72-0) Next Week: BYE
Summary: After having a downer of a game against Kentucky Bridgewater went right back to his normal efficient self against Florida International completing 77% of his passes and throwing for four touchdowns. The problem is that the Cardinals bum rushed FIU and that caused Bridgewater to not play as many snaps and hand the ball off a lot. Thus his numbers were down. Having a game against Kentucky where he didn't look crisp and now pair that up with low numbers and his Heisman stock is starting to project down. What he needs is a huge bounce back game. But there lies another problem, Temple is terrible and we could see another game like this. Bridewater needs a tough opponent bad.
4. Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
Last Week: 14/21 244 yards TD INT, 102 yards rushing 2 TDs vs SMU (42-13) Next Week: at Arkansas
Summary: I've been hesitant to put Manziel back in the Heisman watch mainly because I don't think he has a shot at winning the award. Mainly because he's already won it once and then throw in the immaturity he's shown and I see votes souring on him. However his play this year just makes it so hard to not have him listed here. Yeah I still think he doesn't win the award, but he'll likely finish in the top three or four. He had some some turnovers against Alabama that lost them the lead, but his play almost lead them back. Against SMU he put up another 300 yard plus in total yards and just made plays. Add in that he is so dynamic and allowed to free lance so much that he's going to put up highlight reel plays that will grab your attention.
5. AJ McCarron QB Alabama
Last Week: 20/26 258 TD INT vs Colorado State (31-6) Next Week: vs Mississippi
Summary: You have to wonder if McCarron's quiet demonor and style that isn't very flashy really hurts his chances to win the award. In a game where the Crimson Tide was very conservative, McCarron was still able to put up 258 yards, but he does it so unassuming that you think he struggled. McCarron is an elite talent and with Alabama likely to go undefeated he'll continue to be in the thick of the Heisman Race, however I don't know if he's going to have the signature moment that gets the voters attention.
Just missed out
Brett Hundley QB UCLA
Coming off a big win against Nebraska that vaults Hundley into the discussion, he continues the roll in an easy win over New Mexico State. Hundley threw for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. However he did have two interceptions which could be something to watch as the season goes forward. Keep an eye of the Bruin signal caller who has two weeks where they should roll, but he has a chance to really make his mark in this race with games against Stanford and Oregon coming up. A win there could shoot him right up the board.
