Coaching Carousel (Hot Coordinators)

With college football right around the corner we aren't thinking about coaching changes because that's so far off. But we all know that there will be changes coming in December and in the meantime why not take a look at some of those top coordinators who could be getting their first crack at a head job. Here are five of the top coordinators in college football whose names have been brought up in discussions, but haven't made the move yet. This next carousel could be there time.

Chad Morris
Offensive Coordinator Clemson
Morris was a hot name last year after Clemson continued to put up video game numbers for second straight year. Morris is a spread guru, but is also known for having good balance especially if he has a speedy back. His ability has helped the Tigers go from an underachieving program to a contender for the ACC Title year in and year out. Morris has been a coordinator at Tulsa and before that was a head coach in Texas High School football for 14 years. Having that experience leading a program (Texas HS football is practically small college football) will benefit him because he at least has experience being in charge. Morris did interview for the Texas Tech job last year and in my opinion would have been a better choice. But look out if a Texas school opens up. Morris has the connections in the state and his offense would be a good fit in the Big 12.

Shawn Watson
Offensive Coordinator Louisville
It's amazing what a change of scenery and an elite quarterback can do for your reputation. From 2007-2010 Watson was Nebraska's offensive coordinator and the Huskers offense was nowhere near a success. So much so that Watson "left" to be Louisville's quarterbacks coach. Normally coaches don't willingly take a demotion. But it ended up being a good move for Watson because he was promoted from QB coach to offensive coordinator during his first season. Now Watson was able to run the offense that he wanted and with stud QB Teddy Bridgewater in toe the Cardinals really took off. Now schools have renewed their interest in Watson and he's become a hot name. He's a West Coast Offense guy but he's done a great job making it a fit at Louisville. He's really made the most of this opportunity.

Kirby Smart
Defensive Coordinator Alabama
A no brainier on this list is Kirby Smart. Smart has been targeted by a lot of schools to be their next coach, but so far Smart and decided to stay at Alabama and wait for the right job to open up. Hard to blame him there, he's experiencing a lot of success at Alabama and is the highest paid assistant coach in college football. Smart has a few things going for him that really appeals to schools looking to hire. He's a good recruiter and he's a Saban guy. Right now Nick Saban is the king of college football and everybody wants some piece of him. Smart is that guy so he's in hot demand. But it's all a matter of whether it's the right fit or not.

Pat Narduzzi
Defensive Coordinator Michigan State
One of the oldest traditions in college football is schools hiring coordinators of dominant units. That is where Pat Narduzzi fits in. Narduzzi has been the defensive coordinator at Michigan State since 2007 and in that time him and head coach Mark Dantonio have built a defense that rivals any in the country. The Spartans defense is routinely a top 20 defense and finished #6 overall in 2011. Narduzzi has shown the ability to get top notch talent to East Lansing and develop those players into an elite unit. He was a top consideration at Cincinnati before they hired Brian Kelly back in 2007 and if the Spartans have a season like some are predicting, he could easily get a Big 10 job if it opens up.

Bob Diaco
Defensive Coordinator Notre Dame
When you think of Notre Dame football right now you more than likely think of their dominant defense that carried them to a National Championship appearance. The man behind that dominant defense is none other than coordinator Bob Diaco. Diaco got some interest last year after their magical run, but expect that to pick up even more after this year. Especially once Stephen Tuitt and Louis Nix run wild. Diaco is also intriguing since he runs a 3-4 defense which has some appeal, especially with the success that teams like Georgia, Alabama and Notre Dame are having. If there is an opening in the Big 10 region, expect Diaco's name to be very prominent.
