Heisman Watch (Week 1)

Well the season is underway, and what a weekend!  We saw an epic game between Georgia and Clemson , while several top teams struggle in their opener.  We even saw several FCS teams pull the upset on their FBS counterparts.  How does all this affect the Heisman Race?  Let's find out!

1. Tajh Boyd QB Clemson
Last Week:  270 passing yards 3 TDs, 42 rushing yards 2 TDs vs Georgia (38-35)  Next Week: vs South Carolina State
Summary:  In the season preview Heisman Watch I stated that Clemson's game against Georgia could be a make it or break it for Boyd's Heisman chances.  Boyd seized that opportunity and now is in the drivers seat.  Boyd did it all for the Tigers both on the ground and through the air.  His 5 TDs were huge getting the win and keeping Clemson's title hopes going.

2. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week: 234 passing yards 1 TD, 113 yards rushing 2 TDs vs Nichols State (66-3)  Next Week: at Virginia
Summary:  Mariota may have had the best opening game out of everybody on the watch list going for 347 combine yards.  But the problem is that it was against FCS Nichols State.  The real question will be whether he can do it against the likes of Stanford and UCLA.  Because if he does, his numbers will be too hard to ignore.  But he won't have Chip Kelly there to call the plays.  Can his experience help carry him?

3.  Teddy Bridgewater QB Louisville
Last Week:  23/28 355 5 TD 1 INT vs Ohio (49-7)  Next Week: vs Eastern Kentucky
Summary: It's going to hard for Bridgewater to win the Heisman mainly because the Cardinals could go the entire year without playing a ranked team.  But if Bridgewater keeps having games like this, then that might not be an issue.  Bridgewater was dynamic against Ohio.  Throwing for 355 yards and 5 TDs is pretty amazing, but to average 15 yards per pass and completing 82% is even more astonishing.  But with Bridgewater's skill set, it shouldn't be too big of a surprise.

4.  Duke Johnson RB Miami
Last Week:  19 carries 186 yards 1 TD, 1 catch 38 yards vs Florida Atlantic (34-6)  Next Week:  vs Florida
Summary:  It's about time everybody gets to know Duke Johnson.  Johnson is the lightning fast running back who bust onto the scene late last year and picked up right where he left off.  Against FAU he literaly burst out with long run after long run, finishing with near 200 yards.  He's rising fast in the Heisman Race, but with Florida coming to town next week a good game could really put him in the drivers seat.

5. Braxton Miller QB Ohio State
Last Week:  178 yards passing 1 TD 1 INT, 77 yards rushing vs Buffalo (40-20)  Next Week: vs San Diego State
Summary:  It wasn't the the start of the season Miller wanted, but he was still able to lead the Buckeyes to a victory and didn't look terrible in the process.  His combined 255 yards is pretty solid, but the thing that I questioned was him only having one touchdown.  These are suppose to be the games where you rack up those stats to get things going, but much like last year Miller and the Buckeyes struggle against weaker non conference teams.  Let's hope this was just the first game and we'll see the dynamic Miller in weeks to come.

Just missed out

AJ McCarron QB Alabama
AJ McCarron had an opportunity to really secure his spot in the Heisman Race with a big game against a good Virginia Tech defense.  Instead, McCarron and the Crimson Tide offense struggled and it may be too hard to overcome.  You could chalk some of it up to their special teams playing so well, but you can't excuse the inefficient by the veteran QB.    McCarron completed less than 50% of his passes and looked out of whack.  Part of that had to be their new line which struggled also.  This game may be too hard to overcome because Alabama will always be a run first team and they may go even more ground based from here on out.

Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
I really didn't think that Manziel had much of a shot to win the Heisman going into this season.  He already won it once and his summer was so crazy that probably scared off some Heisman voters.  Then you have him suspended by the NCAA for his role in autograph signings and that makes it even worse.  Then there was his performance against Rice.  Taunting with the signature motion and then the money signs after throwing touchdowns.  Manziel clearly doesn't get it and it's hurting his image more and more.  I honestly don't think he has a chance at all to win the award anymore.

Jadeveon Clowney DE South Carolina
Much like Manziel, I didn't think that Clowney has much of a shot at winning.  But his performance against North Carolina doesn't help his campaign.  Clowney was coming off of being sick and I don't know if he was still feeling the affects in the humid North Carolina heat, but he was really looking like he drug ass.  He looked out of shape and looked like he wasn't even trying at times.  Let's just hope it was sickness.  But I'm not too worried.  But still don't think he wins.
