Heisman Watch (Week 7)

After several weeks of the favorites winning, we finally had some drama in college football.  Several upsets took place and two top five teams were among them.  How does this all affect the Heisman Race?  Was there any new faces?  Did Aaron Murray survive?  Did Marcus Mariota hold onto the top spot?  Let's find out.

1. Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
Last Week:  24/31 366 yards 3 TDs, 88 rushing yards TDs at Washington (45-24) Next Week: vs Washington State
Summary:  In his first true test of the season, Mariota proved why he's the front runner for the Heisman.  Mariota went for 366 yards on 77% of his passes helped guide Oregon to another easy win, this time over top 20 ranked Washington.   Next week's opponent Washington State shouldn't pose too big of a concern, but with Stanford and UCLA coming up we could see Mariota lock in his spot atop the rankings.

2. Tajh Boyd QB Clemson
Last Week:  30/44 334 yards 1 TD, 1 rushing TD vs Boston College (24-14)  Next Week: vs Florida State
Summary:  For three quarters is looked like Boyd's Heisman chances were going out the window.  Losing to Boston College would have been really bad.  Now he did put up 334 yards and two scores, but what's bad is that the score is what most people will continue to remember.  Luckily for Boyd is that Florida State is this week and if he can play like he did against Georgia and he could retake the number one spot.

3. Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
Last Week:  31/39 346 yards passing INT, 124 yards rushing 2 TDs at Mississippi (41-38)  Next Week:  vs Auburn
Summary:  Week in and week out Manziel is having to put up big plays just to get them wins.  This week was no different.  Mississippi was primed for an upset, but Manziel had nothing to do with it.  Down seven points in the waning minutes, Manziel came through with huge scramble for touchdown to tie the game.  Manziel then lead the Aggies down the field for the go ahead FG with no time remaining.  Now a dangerous Auburn team comes to town to knock off the Aggies.

4.  Jameis Winston QB Florida State
Last Week:  BYE  Next Week:  at Clemson
Summary:  Not too often does a player who had a bye week vaults himself into the rankings.  Winston was very close to being in the top five last week and with Murray and Seastrunk putting up clunkers, Winston moves on in.  Winston has been very dynamic this year and will get his first chance at making a strong impact.  Their game at Clemson this weekend could either vault him up toward the top, or send his stock plummeting down.  But we know that Famous Jameis will be fun to watch for years to come.

5. Brett Hundley QB UCLA
Last Week:  31/41 410 yards 3 TDs (37-10)  Next Week:  at Stanford
Summary:  If you haven't seen UCLA and Brett Hundley play this year, you need to stay up late and do so.  But chances are with games against Stanford and Oregon still to come, you'll get the privilege of doing so. This past weekend Hundley was dazzling vs California throwing over 400 yards and three touchdowns.  What's worse is that this sophomore is getting better and better each week.  That's scary.  Hundley will face off against Stanford and their tough defense this week.  But with his talent and weapons he has could give Stanford their second straight loss.
