Coaching Carousel (Miami, OH)

Label as the "Cradle of Coaches," Miami of Ohio has had several quality coaches par laid their time at Miami into getting a better job and having success there.  This has also lead the Redhawks to be one of the top teams in the MAC year in and year out.  However once Shane Montgomery took over from Terry Hoeppner, things haven't been the same.  Montgomery resigned after four years with a record of 17-31.  Things looked to be good when Michael Haywood was running the team going 9-4 in his second season, but left for Pittsburgh after that year.  Looking for a coach who wouldn't leave at their first opportunity, the Redhawks hired Miami alumn Don Treadwell from Michigan State who was their offensive coordinator under successful coach Mark Dantonio.

Miami fans were ecstatic.  Treadwell not only played at Miami but was also an assistant previously at the school. Add that to his successful run as offensive coordinator at Michigan State. At Michigan State Treadwell was able to build a power running attack and utilize quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Kirk Cousins in the passing game. However, Treadwell was never fully able to transform the Redhawks into the same success. Miami never won more than four games a year with him and after a disaster of an 0-5 start, the University relieved him of his duties.

Who Miami turns to is not really clear. The Redhawk program hasn't had much success so they are not going to be able to get a hot name. They may have to the FCS level or look for somebody who wants their first shot at a head coaching job. But they are in the state of Ohio which is chalk full of quality prospects, so that could be a strong selling point. But it will be interesting to see who their next coach is.

Possible Candidates

Aaron Kromer (Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator)
Kromer has a lot in common with former coach Treadwell in that he played at Miami and got his first coaching job with the University. Would he want to some back to his home state and try to resurrect his former school? He would be a sexy hire because of his NFL ties and experience under former Redhawk coach Sean Payton. But Kromer has never been a head coach before and has been in the NFL since 2001. He's just in his first season as an offensive coordinator where he may not be ready to leave quite yet.

Luke Fickell (Ohio State Co-Defensive Coordinator)
Fickell's name has kinda gone on the back burner, but don't be surprised if it gets tossed around for this opening. Now Fickell is a Ohio State guy through and through playing for Buckeyes and coaching with them since 2002. However from all indications, Fickell wants to be a head coach and there's no guarantee that he'll be the Buckeyes head anytime soon. Add in that he's only co-defensive coordinator and that could add fuel to him wanting to leave. Miami wouldn't be a bad landing spot for him. He's from the state and has a lot of recruiting ties. Don't sleep on this name.

Tim Beck (Nebraska Offensive Coordinator)
With all the success that Beck has had turning the Husker offense into a strength has gotten him a lot of attention in coaching circles. He wants to be a head coach at some point and was even courted by UTEP last year. Beck is a Youngstown Ohio native and has recruited the state of Ohio at Nebraska. Add in his ties to the state of Texas and that could be help him out even more. Could this be a job that he is willing to take?

Scott Frost (Oregon Offensive Coordinator)
Frost is going to be a head coach sooner rather than later, but to be honest I'm not sure it's here. But I wouldn't be shocked if Frost was hired. He has a very impressive resume. He was a National Champion QB at Nebraska. Played in the NFL under Bill Parcells, Monte Kiffin, and Bill Belichick. He's been an assistant under Bill Synder and and Chip Kelly, and was even the defensive coordinator at FCS power Northern Iowa. Why would he come to Miami? He could use this as his chance to learn as a head coach at the MAC level before getting a BCS level job. This gives him a chance to get ties to Ohio which could help him if he gets a Midwestern job. It's stretch, but not inconceivable.

Curt Cignetti (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Head Coach) One route the Redhawks might want to go down is looking at successful FCS programs. A person that they could target wold be IUP's Curt Cignetti. Cignetti is 22-5 in his two and a half years with the Crimson Hawks and won their conference last year. Currently they are 4-0 this year. Prior to IUP, Cignetti was the WR and recruiting coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban. And as we know, schools love to hire Saban assistants. If Cignetti wants to move up the coaching ladder, Miami would be a logical next step.
