1. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0) LW 1
Not much to see in Alabama's win over Georgia State. Alabama was clearly the better team and it was nothing but a glorified scrimmage against the winless Panthers. The Crimson Tide move on to Kentucky this week which should produce a similar result.
2. Oregon Ducks (5-0) LW 2
Not only did the Ducks blow out Colorado to remain undefeated, but it also thrust Marcus Mariota to the front of the Heisman Race. This also means the Ducks are entering their toughest part of the schedule. #16 Washington is first and you know they are looking for an upset after losing to Stanford.
3. Clemson Tigers (5-0) LW 3
Clemson did their best to welcome Syracuse to the ACC with a gift basket and a 49-14 beat down in the Carrier Dome. It's truly scary that the Tigers offense continues to get better each week and Sammie Watkins looks like his freshman years. Now the only thing that stands in their way of the Florida State game is Boston College.
4. Stanford Cardinal (5-0) LW 4
.After being upset last year against Washington, the Cardinal didn't want their perfect season to end against the Huskies again. They did exactly that. And it started when they returned the opening kick off for a 99 yard TD. The Stanford defense showed that they are one of the best and slowed down the explosive Huskies. Their game against Oregon could be epic.
5. Georgia Bulldogs (4-1) LW 5
To have a magical season, you are going to need a little luck. Tennessee was suppose to be an easy win, but they gave the Bulldogs everything they could handle. Georgia needed Aaron Murray to take them on a final drive to tie the game and send it to overtime. A bobbled pass in the end zone helped the Bulldogs get a game winning field goal. It won't get any easier with undefeated Missouri this weekend.
6. Florida State Seminoles (5-0) LW 7
Going into the game, some national analysis were having Maryland beating Florida State as their upset special. Well so much for that. Not only did Florida State beat Maryland, they walloped them 63-0. That my friends is a statement game. Even if Maryland isn't as good as we thought, this game tells everybody that the Seminoles are a National Title contender.
7. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0) LW 8
It was a great win at Northwestern for the Buckeyes. The Wildcats are the second best team in the Big 10 right now and for the most part the Buckeyes flat out beat them. But I'm not ready to go all in on Ohio State being a National Title contender. They have too many holes and could very well get upset by somebody coming up.
8. Louisville Cardinals (5-0) LW 6
Another week another win. But Louisville continues to slide down in the rankings. The Cardinals aren't playing anybody good and are not really blowing them out. They are not really looking like a top ten team. Temple is one of the worst teams in college football and the Cardinals only beat them by 23. This week will prove to show us how good the Cardinals are, or how bad their conference is. They host Rutgers and Central Florida. And remember, Louisville tends to drop winnable games at home in the Charlie Strong era.
9. LSU Tigers (5-1) LW 9
After losing to Georgia last weekend, the Tigers used a 28 point fourth quarter to pull away from Mississippi State to get their fifth win of the season. Even with their loss to the Bulldogs, the Tigers look dialed in and still have a shot at the SEC Title. Alabama better watch out, because the offense continues to get better which can be pretty scary.
10. UCLA Bruins (4-0) LW 12
UCLA used six interceptions and the strong play of Brett Hundley to continue their winning streak and lay claim to a top 10 ranking. Sure the win was against Utah, but winning on a Thursday night away from home is not easy in college football. It's these tough games that we really get to see what teams are made of. The Bruins will face off against Cal this weekend before a tough two game stretch against Stanford and Oregon.
11. Texas A&M Aggies (4-1) LW 10
The Aggies enjoyed a week off after their game against Arkansas that was a lot closer than it should have been. With their defense playing so bad they run the risk of getting upset because they can't stop anybody. Don't be surprised if that happens this weekend. Mississippi is coming off two straight losses, but have the offensive firepower to hurt A&M. Add that it's in Oxford and that adds to the chances.
12. Miami Hurricanes (5-0) LW 13
Playing Georgia Tech and their triple option offense is never an easy task for a team who doesn't have a bye week to prepare. But the Hurricanes were able to get a win and move on, and that's all that matters. Up next is a struggling North Carolina team that still has a ton of talent and could pull the upset here. Especially going from a triple option to a spread passing attack. Could there be a upset watch?
13. Baylor Bears (4-0) LW 14
With West Virginia just knocking off Oklahoma State, the Baylor Bears didn't want there to be any doubt in this game. And they did that very early and with authority. The Bears used five straight touchdowns in the first and second quarter to blow the game open. Then accumulated 864 total yards. No people, this wasn't a video game. At this rate you have to wonder if anybody in the Big 12 is going to be able to slow down this team.
14. Oklahoma Sooners (5-0) LW 15
Brennan Clay's 111 yard rushing were key to the Sooners getting the three point victory. But it was his 76 yarder in the 4th quarter that proved to be the key touchdown. The win over TCU keeps the Sooners perfect before their big time game against Texas. Can the Sooners blowout Texas for a second straight year and cement Mack Brown's departure?
15. South Carolina Gamecocks (4-1) LW 11
South Carolina might be 4-1, but their season seems like it's a disaster. They got blown out by Georgia, Clowney has been mailing it in, and they are barely beating low level SEC schools. They better get things figured out quick or their shot at the SEC West title is going to slip away.
16. Florida Gators (4-1) LW 20
It's better late than never, but the Gators offense is starting to pick up steam and it couldn't come at a better time. QB Tyler Murphy has sparked the offense. He threw for 240 yards and 3 TDs against Arkansas with two of them going to Solomon Patton. They'll need that offense to be humming when they travel to LSU to face off against a very talented LSU defense.
17. Washington Huskies (4-1) LW 16
It's hard to really knock the Huskies down after losing to the #4 ranked team by three points at their stadium. Washington out gained the Cardinal and was even in the turnover battle. But giving up a 99 yard kickoff to open the game turned out to be the difference maker. Washington can't afford to feel sorry for themselves with Oregon coming to town. They could still win here and have a shot at the Pac 12 Title Game. But that's a big if.
18. Michigan Wolverines (5-0) LW 21
Oh what a bye week can do. Going into their weekend off, the Wolverines struggled through wins against Akron and Purdue. Against Minnesota they got back on track and got an easy 42-13 win. What was even better is that Devin Gardner stayed mistake free. Now the Wolverines move onto Penn State who is reeling.
19. Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-1) LW 19
If it wasn't for two late interceptions, we could be talking about Oklahoma State dropping out of the rankings because of two straight losses. Especially to two teams that will be fighting to just make a bowl game. Luckily for the Cowboys their offense got things figured out at the end of the game and they survived. Now on to a bye week where they hope to get things figured out on their quest to win the Big 12.
20. Northwestern Wildcats (4-1) LW 17
At some point you have to feel sorry for the Wildcats. Last year they had leads in the forth quarter of all three of their losses, but couldn't hold on. Well the same thing happened against Ohio State. Leading 10 points in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter the Buckeyes scored a touchdown to draw it to three and then added another touchdown in the beginning of the fourth quarter to take the lead. Ohio State never looked back.
21. Fresno State Bulldogs (5-0) LW 22
The Fresno State offense continues to roll putting up 61 points in a victory over Idaho. Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 419 yards and five touchdowns in the win. The Bulldogs will take a week off before facing UNLV in two weeks. But looking ahead at their schedule you have to wonder who is going to knock them off? Pretty cupcake.
22. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0) LW 23
With Kansas jumping out to an early 10 point lead and QB Baker Mayfield getting injured had to put some fear into the Red Raiders. However they responded and got out with an easy 54-16 victory. But how costly was the win? If Mayfield has to sit out games due to the injury that could hurt Tech. But luckily they face off against Iowa State who shouldn't pose too much of an issue.
23. Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-1) LW NR
Early season defensive struggles have really affect the Huskers who tumbled out of the rankings after their collapse against UCLA. But their win against Illinois shows that there is still hope for the Huskers this season. Sure it was Illinois, but the Huskers defense was aggressive and played with a swagger that we haven't seen in a while. It's a good thing because they still have a couple of patsy to go before they run the gauntlet against Northwestern, Michigan and Michigan State. All losable games.
24. Virginia Tech Hokies (5-1) LW NR
There were not very high expectations out of the Hokies going into this season. I even predicted them to be third in their own division. However they didn't look awful in the opening week game against Alabama and have gone on to win every game so far. QB Logan Thomas hasn't looked like a Heisman candidate, but is making fewer mistakes and the offense has been a lot better because of it. Now they'll have to face off against an improved Pitt team to keep their roll going.
25. Michigan State Spartans (4-1) LW NR
The bad case of great defense and horrible offense. That's what is preventing the Spartans from being undefeated and making noise. But there could be hope. Against an improved Iowa team the Spartans actually moved the ball and didn't have to rely on their defense to score the touchdowns. QB Connor Cook had 277 yards and 2 TDs. They'll need him to replicate that against an Indiana team that can score on anybody.
Dropped Out: Mississippi Rebels, Maryland Terrapins, Wisconsin Badgers
